We could subset/embed otf/type 1 versions for searchable text, but there were so many other complications it's hard to explain here. If you get a workaround please post!!! Because we have currently 7 different print houses to do our jobs and we use the same specification PDF to all of them. We *cannot* have *any* file-related issues with our PDFs, because due to our extremely high volume, we do not press-proof anything. We can't risk having any type issues or any sort of RIPping error, which we did have previously.

We are looking into placing customer-supplied PDFs directly into our layouts, and some have come through with CID, but anything we PDF from source files (InD, QXP, Ai etc) won't have CID 'cause we do it right. Our customers, well, we can't control how they do it (you know how it is). I tried PDF Optimizer on a file and it doesn't even list any fonts able to be unembedded. You need to look at generating your PDFs to an ISO standard (PDF/X) and then with tools available (free) - you can validate if their renderers can cope. The Ghent PDF workgroup ([url]have a suite of tools (so do other organisations) that can check potential problems areas for renderers such as font types, formats, encoding, overprints etc., etc).

If their renderers do not pass the tests - they must ensure they are running industry compliant renderers. You can use this as reasoning whilst talking to the printers.
